This 6-week course in the Lamaze method of childbirth is designed to educate expectant parents about relaxation and breathing patterns, labor and delivery, hospital procedures and the newborn. Each class consists of lectures, provided by your physician and instructors, as well as Lamaze breathing and comfort techniques. Topics are listed below in order of presentation.
- Labor and Delivery - Signs and stages of labor, and admission and hospital procedures.
- Anesthesia and Cesarean Section - Lecture and slide presentation cover options and effects of medications, and indicators and procedures of Cesarean delivery.
- Birth Film and Women's Center - Film and discussion of medicated and non-medicated labors and deliveries. A thorough overview of the labor, delivery and postpartum units.
- The Newborn - A pediatrician will present slides and discussion on the newborn's appearance and behavior and answer any questions about newborn care.
- Postpartum - Physical and emotional aspects of postpartum period; Benefit and process of retrieving and storing your baby's cord blood.
- Baby Care Basics, Infant CPR - An overview of infant care needs is presented, as well as instruction in CPR, safety and childproofing.
Class size is not restricted, however, registration is required.
* The Preparation for Childbirth classes meet in the Schaetzel Center at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla.
* The center is located to the right of the main entrance to the hospital.
* Please bring two pillows with you to class, and wear comfortable clothes.
